“Is there another Clergy member working against him, trying to crush the spirit of freedom that (should) be at the heart of his music?”
Of course there is. Consider the backlash against Elvis when he first appeared, which continues today against other wusicians and such. The people who argued in favor of Elvis forty years ago are the ones opposed to Marilyn Manson today.
There’s got to be an archetype of The Censor or something, that tries to eliminate freedom in art (on the good side, to ‘protect the children’, on the bad side to eliminate original thought). Perhaps this is just one manifestation of some larger authoritarian archetype, though.
But it’d be cool to have a couple of Censor avatars working together to stop art before it happens, by interrupting artists at work, and calling themselves the “men from Porlock”.
Might I suggest that you find enough covers and remixes of “Viva Los Vegas” to fill up a CD and then base your adventure in the occult underbely of entropomancers and mafiosi in Sin city? Versions range from Elvis to the Dead Kennedies and beyond. Other appropriate songs might work as well, depending on your game.
I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of variations of musical style, while keeping the same melody (as opposed to how most CDs keep the same style and vary melody). Like the Chocobo song in Final Fantasy.
One of the first things I did when I obtained the 2nd Ed book was make notes as to which rumors would be true and which wouldn’t. This worked to provide me with story seeds, and also would mean the players couldn’t immediately discount all the wird rumors that they heard. No matter how odd something may sound, it might be true. At the very least, a couple of people believe in it, which could be exploited somehow on an intelligent PC’s part.
I’d throw in some stuff related to Emperor Norton having been a high level avatar of the True King, if I were running the game.
You might want to seek out a copy of the “Constitution on the Church of Vatican Council II”. That should tell you most of what you’d want to know, I’d think. You can get a copy used from amazon for about $5, and might want to look into some of the other books talking about the results of Vatican II.
71-90: Music soothes the savage beat. With a successful avatar roll and a musical performance, you can negate the effects of any passion, perhaps some madness checks, and generally force people to stop fighting and calm down. This is a more specialized, but more powerful extension of the general mood altering effects.
My take on the Minstrel comes from Orpheus and Dante, who pass through Hell for the love of a woman and later gain prophetic ability. Maybe that’s the 91+ channel.
Why no sections for the unnatural and/or the unexplained? What if I want to post new game ideas explaining, say, crop circles, or some sort of squamous horror to be used by the local evil cabal? Where would I post these thing? Some but not all could fit in other categories, I suppose.
Is there some way we can start new topics for the forum? I didn’t see any handy little button to push for that.
A FAQ would be nice, for botht he site and for UA in general, though I suppose you might have to wait for some questions to become frequently asked first.
