3- personally my favorite part of RPGs is exposure and trying out of new ideas. Each system and setting has a different take on how the world works or should work. This combined with interesting stories can be good for the mind. Also, playing a character can give you a chance to “try out” a new personality, philosophy, or life style. This is handy when evaluating a personal change and can give insight into how other people live. Of course this simulation is limited by the game, story, system and your ability to RP, but I have found it a very useful thought experiment for potential life changes and personal introspection.
I’ve notice a few effects from gaming:
1- It is an escapist activity for some. It allows us to escape from the mundane reality to a world where we are powerful and important. I don’t know if this is good, but having an escape can be useful for those of us who have crappy lives in the real world.
2- It gives intellectually minded people something to do together. I read once that there are people who like people and there are people who like ideas. Idea people often are boring even to one another and while they might still crave friendship and social interaction, they are more interested in movies, books, and games than actual social interaction. RPGs give us a game we can play together that is entirely verbal and usually in person.
not all schools have a blast and this one seems like a good candidate for not having one.
alternately it could rapidly accelerate the effects of self denial ( dehydration, sleep deprivation, and starvation.) This would be hard to explain as a full scale blast, but maybe it could do damage slowly over time or perhaps a sig would only do minor damage.
PDF is your only hope. You can buy it at Atlas games’ website

Really, you have two questions 1- why does the duke want to protect it and 2- why doesn’t he keep it close to him where he can keep an eye on it. If it was useful, he would likely keep it where he could easily access it or at least protect it.
I think it makes sense that the item has a liability to it. The duke can’t let it be discovered or destroyed, yet wants it far away from him. Or it might have a good use but something bad happens if he keeps it close or uses it too much.
Perhaps the jar holds some of his crippling memories. If it breaks they return to him but he wants it far away from him. Or maybe it holds the fault for something he’s done. As long as the jar is safe no one will find out what he’s done.
As for the shears, maybe they allow the user to hurt someone in much the same way a voodoo doll works. (You cut up a picture of the person and that happens to them). Or perhaps you can cut them out of the universe (Where everyone forgets who they are and no records of them exist.) The drawback being that each second spent in contact with it shortens your life by one day.
Also, geomancy might work. I think it is from the same book as Mac Attack. It has nothing to do with geography or geology, but just with systems such as roads, politics, cities, and the like.
Occasionally I see things in the “real” world that UA seems to explain very well. However, unfortunately, this is just a game.
I think the way it is seems reasonable. Someone might only get hit by a small part of a shotgun blast and it might only wing his ear. Also, a large bullet might simply take off a pinky finger.
The mechanic isn’t perfect, but I think it is good enough.
The problem i always struggle with is that if you are shot or stabbed, you might not die for hours but the way damage is done is usually all at once.
no. it spells out what conditions they break taboo in the school and specifically uses that as a time when it does not break taboo. They only break taboo if they intentionally allow someone to alter their body, such as going to a doctor or getting a tattoo. In battle, the epideromancer will be injured against his will and hist best efforts, thus the taboo is not broken.
I agree that unnatural does not fit as well, but maybe it would simply be best to give all characters (npc and pc) 1-2 hardends. I’ll have to see how things work out.
Yeah UA is kind of a RPG cult. There are a few who like it a lot and the rest of the world has never heard of it and does not care.
Are there any other UA fans in Edmonton?
uh what happened? I thought you were going to run a game but communication broke down. might have been caused by an email problem or some other delay
i might be interested in being in the game… depending on when and how it is run. i have never been in an rpg over the internet, seems an interesting idea
