I would like to just know what locations (generally) everyone uses for UA. I always assumed people ran games that took place in their own country and often their own location in that country.
Recently, a friend of mine came back from Europe where he gamed and attended school. He said the guys he played with set all their games in America.
I have ran a few games that were globe-trotters, but preferred to run in places I had actually been. Of the few places outside Mid-West America I’ve set games in, but never seen:
Akt’ubinsk, Kazakhstan
Rio De Janeriro, Brazil
Berlin, Germany
Seattle, Washington USA
LA, California USA
Few of these games stayed in these locations for long as I always felt I couldn’t really do the locations the justice they deserved. Not LA though, we get LA culture and geography in movies and TV every day; you really can’t avoid the place seeping into your noggin.
So, where do your characters do the dirty work of exploring the Occult Undergroud?
I’ll personally be running my next game in my home town of Sydney, Australia. I think that layering crazy-ass magick and horror happenings over everyday life in your hometown can’t be beat. Plus it makes for a whole new look at Grand Central Station when you remember the fight in the toilets your PCs had with a bodybag just last week….
I run my relatively new UA2 campaign in Oslo, which just happen to be where I live. ^_^
Kind of fun, actually, specially since I’ve hever had a game run here before…
It does depend on the game one plays and the atmosphere he likes to reproduce…i personally only use Italy (my homeland) for Kult…in particular Turin, which is a mystical city for excellence…i have used Venice as backround for “dark ages” but as for modern “vampire” i prefer to use the Gothique of Prague
Then of course come UA…i use America for that..the games so american anyway…its so damn “in your face” that it feels out of place in anywhere else
As a general rule i try to avoid using places that i know well….i always base my settings in places where i do not live…and let my mind ravage through all possibility….
I think it’d be great fun for a group of non-American gamers to play a group of American characters who are having adventures in the player’s country. So if you’re in France, play Americans visiting France and trying to buy guns and running from the police and not knowing the language and all that stuff. It’d be a hoot.
Damn thats a good idea Tynes!!!
And an oportunity to truly integrate ones own cultural stereotypes..
I could have the PC’s as japanese tourists visiting milan…taking photographs of the Duomo, getting ripped off at restaurants and trying to figure what fun young italian’s can feel in yelling “Yakuza!! Scappate!!!” and running away laughing (actually i’m probably the only person who does this…but it is inebriating i assure you..)
The japanese could me mancers about to gain a major charge as soon as they take their 7,777th photograph of their friends smiling idiotically and making peace signs for absolutely no good reason
On a more serious note (as if talking about roleplaying games can be taken seriously) i do like this idea and its pretty easy to integrate in my game (since the characters are all American to start with) all i have to do is find an excuse for them going to Italy…the eternal search for good food??
I’m about to start my very first UA campaign (street level). Since I’ve already run a modern White Wolf campaign set in Houston, TX, I think I have a good enough feel for the city to base (or at least start) my UA street level campaign there. (and yeah I’ve lived there for a few years)
I’ll letcha know how it goes.
