You could write up the painting with a cursed/blessed history. The painting, through coincidence, causes the owner to attract the attention of someone dangerous (perhaps serial killers specifically), thus the curse, but it shows the action of the serial killer, allowing the victim to possibly prepare or defend himself. The boon of this is that any time there’s a serial killer after him, he gets the advantage of knowing what they’re up to. Unfortunately there’s ALWAYS a serial killer after him. Easily a failed scrying device someone tried to make and screwed up. Maybe the only rumours that are out are those that say it gives warning of those out to get you, a chase to get this valuable device gets out, the device hot-potatos around as the serial killer/s take the series of owners out and the painting changes hands.
I wonder what would happen if someone just ripped up the painting and then burned it?
Well, I suppose either they still have a serial killer after them, but no way to detect his movements or it brings the serial killer right to where the person burning it is. Which, I’m sure, the person isn’t prepared for…
Or they just get booted out of the chain of serial killings.
At least, the mystical connection is severed… they may still be a target, just not for any magickal reason.
Which would be kinda funny.
Sure, it broke the curse, but he still wants to kill you.
