Heya everyone, or whomever is reading this. I’d like to see if everyone wants to help pitch in on an idea I’ve been trying to wrap my brain around. In Statosphere they contantly talk about the Terrorist archtype, but no book has any mention of channels for it. So I was wondering if anyone would like to help me create it?
Just my $0.02, but here’s a thought: terrorists are by nature able to blend into their environment (unlike uniformed combatants), so something akin to Urbanomancy’s Brick Chameleon might not be ENTIRELY inappropriate – but a -10% (or worse) shift on Mind, Notice or Investigate for someone trying to ‘smoke them out’ might be better.
After that, the question of ‘why are we afraid of terrorists’ is pretty easy to answer – they could be ANYWHERE, the orgnanize well, they don’t adhere to Codes of Conduct in battle, they will kill and die for a Cause (probably an element of the channel) – all scary, all replicateable from a game perspective.
Terrorists are the ultimate form of Violent political reform. I don’t have a codified “game mechanic “, but I would think that getting media distribution for a terrorist act would be easy as pie. So for every avatar terrorist action they attempt, National media is just drawn to it, perhaps faster than police or government officials.
The very name terrorist is a suggestion. Terrorists are scary. Lock up your daughters, buy a gun, do anything to protect yourself. Why not have the avatar of the terrorist able to make people afraid of, and incredibly aware of a certain set of actions/ policies. This will make it easier to complete the task the avatar of the terrorist sets out to complete.
If you ask me, the “Terrorist” is not as well-rooted in the collective unconscious as most Archetypes typically are (or rather: should be). There is a wide schism of what people (as a whole) regard as the “Terrorist”, and we could spend some time arguing about what a Terrorist actually is.
Fact of the matter is, “Terrorist” has been cast as the universal Boogeyman, the “evil violent fighter against order which we all must fear” (or something like that) by the general media spin. And people are catching on. But not everybody, because many Terrorists are, well, very different – depending on their personal beliefs and agendas. Any terrorist – at their core – believes in something higher or noble that they convey with their actions; something they battle to the bitter end. Causing fear is only a side-effect of their ruthless actions and a way to draw attention. And given, if you blow up something or kill people out on the open, you will draw media and law enforcement’s attention. You don’t even need avatar channels to do that.
Bottom line: I don’t understand why anybody would really need a Terrorist archetype when the Warrior is actually the true embodiment of what a “Terrorist” truly is at its core. Mainly because I don’t believe in the cliché Terrorist as the media is trying to sell them. And I know for a fact I’m not the single only person to look at it that way. Which would mean such an Avatar would be quite a weak one because it’s weakly rooted in the collective unconscious.
Just my two cents on the subject.
To avoid overlap with the Warrior Avatar, you should focus on the hidden civilians VS oppressive authority angle.
1%-50% : Tools for the fight: find a dealer willing to sell you an illegal Uzi, build a bomb out of unlikely parts, acquire a cheap car to load with explosives and park near the enemy headquarters.
51-70% : Support from the Masses : Convince someone sympathetic to your cause to let you use their home as a safe house for a few days, give you a lift out of town, or provide some other nonviolent help.
71%-90%: Blend into the crowd: As long a you aren’t carrying a weapon or splattered with blood, the authorities can look you in the eye and not recognize you.
91% : For every one of us you kill, two more will take their place : Convince someone who has been wronged by the people you are fighting to actively take up arms against your enemy.
