I’ll be the first to admit that I thought the WECHBY archetype was rather straight forward. She’s the good time girl, the party girl, the American blondie of men’s dreams (quite a prevelant stereotype in Asia as much as America).
And then, a friend of mine made me listen to a song by James Blunt called “You’re Beautiful,” lyrics below:
My life is brilliant.
My life is brilliant,
My love is pure,
I saw an angel,
Of that I’m sure.
She smiled at me on the subway,
She was with another man,
But I won’t lose no sleep on that, ‘cos I have got a plan.
You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful, It’s true.
I saw your face,
In a crowded place,
And i don’t know what to do,
‘Cos I’ll never be with you.
Yes she caught my eye,
As I walked on by
She could see from my face that I was, fucking high,
And I don’t think, that I’ll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.
You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful.
You’re beautiful, It’s true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And i don’t know what to do, cos I’ll never be with you.
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful, It’s true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But its time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.
END
Its a song that seems everyone i’ve spoken to can relate to. Suddenly the WECHBY doesn’t look so simple anymore.
She’s the Beautiful Stranger – a person who could change your life for the better if you just…..just got to know her somehow. Maybe even if you can’t have her she can still change your life for the better just by seeing her.
Or in the case of the Song’s protagonist – who is apparently committing suicide overdose on the music video – seeing her becomes the whole point to his existence.
Its a less cheerful, perhaps more nostalgic interpretation of the WECHBY – could it be a competing interpretation for the post vs. the Naked Goddess?
