As one of my summer projects, I am planning to spend some time making a game system to be used primarily by me and my friends. As UA has most of what I want as far as feel and mechanics, I plan to steel from the source material quite a bit. Normally I would just get a few copies of the source books for my group and make references. However, they are hard to find and there would be lots of modifications and house rules (and I like to write), it would be easier to just plagiaries and modify the material as I see fit.
I don’t plan to sell this and doubt it would become popular but I do plan to post it on the web. The problem is that the source material is still copyrighted. I plan to site the source books and all, but am not sure if I could still end up trouble.
Can I do this? Am I worrying too much?
I would recommend crediting Unknown Armies as the core source and inspiration of your material, and that such material is copyrighted by them and Atlas Games just to cover your ass (and show some respect for Stolze and Tynes’ hard work).
Otherwise, I wouldn’t worry overmuch, as you’ve modified the system and are not just throwing up a big “GET UNKNOWN ARMIES FREE!@!!1!” thing.
I say go for it man.
