This looks like a change in the clergy to me.
I had this revelation the other day while playing “Zombie Farm”. Undead are not considered scary anymore.
Zombies frequently appear as cute cartoons and most zombie movies are comedy more than horror.
Vampires are also not scary. They are cool, mysterious and sexy now.
Witches, warlocks, demons and most monsters are cute, sexy or at least not really scary.
To fill the void, scientists are starting to be seen as mysterious and untrustworthy, computers and robots are seen as sources of mystery and potential evil. We used to blame witches for drought and famine, now we blame science and industry. This represents a significant shift in our culture’s thinking. One that has come about in the last 10 years or so.
Shaun of the dead rode the zeitgeist triggered by Buffy the vampire slayer – A new generations exposure to iconic monsters like vampires and zombies is universally tongue in cheek or twee. Fear of the unknown has been replaced by fear of the possible (if improbable) – The serial killer has replaced the vampire; the molester has replaced the zombie, the terrorist has replaced the werewolf. Dracula is Swine Flu.
I still hold out hope for the classic horror scene. The Crazies was really good for a few scares, and Paranormal Activity did it’s job well. Although Twilight and WhiteWolf are doing their best to take the “horror” out of the horror genre.
