I’ve spoken to many gamers who’ve told me that gaming has changed
their lives in positive ways. I’m interested in any stories you might
have of how playing a particular character changed your personality or
helped you to learn something, or any other ways in which gaming has
helped you transform yourself or work on issues. I am working on a
book on the subject right now, and I could really use quotes for it if
anyone’s willing to share.

I’ve notice a few effects from gaming:
1- It is an escapist activity for some. It allows us to escape from the mundane reality to a world where we are powerful and important. I don’t know if this is good, but having an escape can be useful for those of us who have crappy lives in the real world.
2- It gives intellectually minded people something to do together. I read once that there are people who like people and there are people who like ideas. Idea people often are boring even to one another and while they might still crave friendship and social interaction, they are more interested in movies, books, and games than actual social interaction. RPGs give us a game we can play together that is entirely verbal and usually in person.
3- personally my favorite part of RPGs is exposure and trying out of new ideas. Each system and setting has a different take on how the world works or should work. This combined with interesting stories can be good for the mind. Also, playing a character can give you a chance to “try out” a new personality, philosophy, or life style. This is handy when evaluating a personal change and can give insight into how other people live. Of course this simulation is limited by the game, story, system and your ability to RP, but I have found it a very useful thought experiment for potential life changes and personal introspection.
