Inspiromancy

God helps those who help themselves.

Nickname: Delegators, Coffeeshop Revolutionaries

Lead, follow, or get out of the way. There are two types of people in the world – wolves, and sheep. Most people are sheep. They sit in their tidy little cubicles and dream their little dreams, little realizing that they’re being shorn – giving up their bodies and minds to make a wolf they’ll never meet the kind of money they’ll never see. Oh sure, the wolf will toss a couple of oats their way here and there (while he’s gorging on filet mignon), but whatever paltry income the sheep make is spent on TVs and cars and sweaters for their dogs and a thousand other things they don’t NEED. Of course, somebody has to make all this stuff, so in the process, the sheep makes another wolf rich(er), and another sheep (more) miserable.

Sheep are worthless. Forget them. When wool falls out of style, they’ll be killed and eaten, but it hardly matters; they’re already dead. But then, there’s the few that stand up. The wolves in sheep’s clothing, as it were, who believe in something and FIGHT for it. You’re the one who makes sure they succeed.

Inspiromancy is concerned with the empowerment of others – give a man a fish, and all that. Once upon a time, this was a powerhouse of a school. Back in the old days, you could kill somebody who tried to exploit you and probably get away with it. All it took, sometimes, was a little push. Then the industrial revolution happened. Before we knew it, wolves had the guns, the manpower, the cops and forensic medicine on their side. The people began to live in fear of claiming what was rightfully theirs – after all, there was no conceivable way they could get away with it. Then something happened. The world’s capitalist superpower got a little greedy, a couple of buildings exploded, a few pipelines were built. The wolves claimed it was all a grand coincidence, but dissent started to grow. And wherever there is rabble, there is a rouser.

Abuse of Power
For the purposes of this school of magic, abuse of power means consciously using a situation or position to gain an advantage over someone else. This could be a politician stealing public money, or a bully threatening a younger child for lunch money.

Champion
A person successfully convinced to act on an abuse of power is the Inspiromancer’s Champion.

Charging
Inspiromancers gain charges for convincing others to act DIRECTLY on abuses of power. If the usual channel involves delegation of responsibility, it does not count. You cannot charge up for convincing an abused wife to call a spousal abuse hotline. You CAN charge up for convincing her to break something heavy over his head.

Gain a minor charge
Uncover and convince someone to act on a minor abuse of power. If a professor marks down a student for arguing with his theories, convince that student to make a fool of him in front of the faculty. If Bob the Accountant asks Dave the Intern to go grab him a coffee, convince Dave the Intern to tell him off or (better yet) urinate in the drink.

Gain a significant charge
Uncover and convince someone to act on a significant abuse of power. If a bureaucrat is skimming public money to pay for his daughter’s education, convince the public to ride him out of town on a rail. If Joe the Lowlife is blackmailing Sarah the Former Stripper, convince her to shoot him.

Gain a major charge
Uncover a major abuse of power (like a government conspiracy, an Enron or what have you), and rouse a rabble to act on it. And by act on it, we usually mean violently.

Taboo
Acting on any abuse of power directly, EVEN if it threatens the Inspiromancer’s life, is taboo. Delegators must always work through others. Also, Inspiromancers may not use their magic to benefit sheep – their spells may only be used on Champions except where otherwise noted in the spell description.

Blast
Inspiromancy, contrary to what one might assume, does have a blast. However, like an Amoromancer, they need to expend significant charges to get a minor effect. Moreover, using the blast is actually a violation of taboo.

Random Magic
Random Inspiromancy is primarily concerned with manipulating emotions, especially with regard to confidence and obedience.

Symbolic Tension
Inspiromancers disdain “cowards”, but are absolutely dependent on others to solve their own problems. Also, most Inspiromancers consider themselves protectors of The People, but use their magic to benefit those strong enough to get along without it.

Sample Minor Formulas

The Measure of a Man
1 minor charge
When this spell is cast on someone, the Inspiromancer gets a sense of their Noble passion.

Talking Trash
2 minor charges
This spell is cast on somebody actively threatening the Inspiromancer’s Champion with harm (be it physical or fiscal). The delegator essentially stands tall, puffs out his chest, and says ominously: “That’s not a very good idea.” (Or, “Yeah, you want some of this?” or what have you). For the remainder of the interaction, any social rolls that can be used for intimidation gain a +15% shift. The spell automatically fails if the target voices the magic words: “Yeah? Well what are YOU gonna do about it?” or any reasonable analogue. Talking Trash can be used on people threatening the Inspiromancer, but such use violates taboo.

Call to Arms
3 minor charges
Sometimes, people need a little push to get going. The Inspiromancer casts this spell on somebody suffering an abuse of power. If the target is already a Champion (that is, committed to resisting) they gain a +15% shift to any skill they use to protect themselves. If the target is not a Champion, they’re compelled to fight back – attempting to turn the other cheek forces a Self-4 check. This version of the spell does not violate taboo, but (obviously) does not gain a charge.

Do Me a Favour?
3 minor charges
This spell compels the Delegator’s Champion to do him a personal favour unrelated to the Champion’s conflict. The favour cannot expose the Champion to significant risk, but a little bit of risk (losing $100, getting smacked) is acceptable.

Teach a Man to Fish
5 minor charges
Not everybody has the skill-set required to solve their own problems. This spell allows the Inspiromancer to give his Champion a skill from his own character sheet for three days. The Delegator cannot use that skill while it is on loan. The skill level is not subject to the Champion’s trait limitations (so there’s no problem with lending a Body-20 weakling Brute Force 65%). However, if that skill is used in a situation outside righting the specific abuse of power for which it was meant, the spell fails early.

Sample Significant Formulas

I’m a Man of Peace!
1 significant charge
This is the Inspiromancer’s blast, a weapon of absolute last resort. The Delegator gets down on his knees, burst into tears, and begs for his life. The spectacle is so pitiful that anyone trying to harm him must make a Violence-5 Stress check or be unable to. If the target tries to attack the Inspiromancer, he takes damage as per a minor blast. Anybody who witnesses the pathetic display will forever after be immune to the Inspiromancer’s magic. Using this spell violates taboo.

Martyr for the Cause
2 significant charges
The Inspiromancer’s Champion does not have to make any sort of stress checks for an entire day, and will happily die in the name of any cause he is fighting for. During this day, he will not question any orders from the Inspiromancer – he has effectively become a zealot. His highest combat skill automatically becomes an Obsession if it isn’t already, “just in case.”

Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing
2 significant charges
Sometimes things go wrong. Sometimes your Champion gets it into his head that he’s been manipulated. But you MADE him, and you can break him. Casting this spell on a former Champion forces him to make a Self-7 roll in order to take any action that might do harm to his ex-benefactor (only one such roll is necessary per use of the spell; once intent is established, further actions are not subject to the stress check). Use of this spell does not violate taboo.

Carte Blanche
3 significant charges
Cast this spell, and the law will be on the Champion’s side. Any illegal act he commits against his oppressor will be exonerated in the eyes of the law. Juries and judges will see things his way, witnesses testimony will show the Champion in the best possible light, etc. This spell may only be cast on a Champion, and only after he commits to an illegal course of action. If the spell is used as a carrot-on-a-stick by less-than-scrupulous Coffeeshop Revolutionary (Go ahead! I’ll make sure you don’t go to jail!), it works in reverse, guaranteeing the harshest punishment possible under the law. In this case, the Champion can attempt to implicate the Delegator, but will not be believed.

Viva la Revolucion!
4 significant charges
The Inspiromancer makes a speech about the depradations of a particular person or group of people (although it does not have to be true) in an attempt to incite mob justice. Use the Riot rules in UA 2nd edition to determine how many people are caught up in a fervor (assign modifiers based on how convincing the speech was, and how awful the alleged offences are). If the target is nearby, the mob desires nothing better than to rip them to shreds. If the target is further away, the mob will head in his direction, but lose 10% of its size per half-hour.

Sample Major Effects
Create a powerful construct that will protect you and can benefit from spells aimed at Champions. Raise a skilled army that will obey your commands to the letter. Bring down a government from within.

Look, seriously: in what way is this different from the avatar “the rebel”? or “the demagogue”? (yes, I know, there are a lot of differences, like this in a school and they are avatar paths but aside from that?)

The same area of phenomenology, similar taboos… it’s all been done before. If you insist on having one of these guys around as a badass NPC, go ahead, but please post him, with this school as an addendum, in the “dukes” section.

    Am I harsh?

    I dunno, are you? 🙂

This school may actually have sort of gotten away from me.. The initial idea I had was one of guardianship – somebody who helps those who stand up to people in power (but not entirely noble, in that it disdains and often uses the people who are unwilling or unable to stand up for themselves – who, of course, would be the most likely to benefit from the protection). So this isn’t exactly what it started to be in my head…

Nonetheless, I think it’s an interesting adept school, and *I* would use it for a villain/ally/PC.. so logically, somebody else might be able to make use of it as well 🙂
