The Fixer

When the chips are down, help can come from surprising places.

Attributes: Some people never lose their cool when it really counts. They personify what Hemingway described as grace under pressure. When the chips are down, these people don’t even break a sweat. You don’t ever want to sit down across from The Fixer at a poker table. You need Wolfie if you’re Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta and need to get rid of that body in the back of your ride at an ungodly hour of the morning.

The Fixer will never be there for the long haul. She just parachutes into a bleak and stressful situation, solves the problem in a cool and efficient manner and then disappears. Often, the fixer is not highly thought of or even known before her big day. Many Fixers come from Blue Collar Backgrounds and make their living doing hard, physical work and some are professional athletes.

Sometimes The Fixer’s mojo only functions once and then it never works again. Bucky F—king Dent is a possible example from modern sports of a previously unheralded fixer whose mojo really only came to life for one unforgettable at bat.

Symbols: The Fireman’s Helmet, a Lifeguard’s chair, a matador’s cape and sword, a free throw line on a basketball court. Anything that conjures up an image of someone calmly and coolly performing a difficult or dangerous task, under extreme pressure, and making it look easy.

Masks: Paul Bunyan, David (vs. Goliath).

Suspected Avatars In History: Aetius (Defeated Attila at Chalons and then was assassinated a little bit later), Bucky Dent, Todd Beamer, the leader who took charge of The 3-Mile Island Plant and prevented it from becoming a disaster like Chernobyl.

Channels:

01-50%: The Fixer calms the emotions and reactions of others in the same room as him. Once per really threatening situation, the Fixer can cause everyone around him to make Self-Checks that are no more than 2-Levels higher than the highest one in that character that the individual has had to make.

51-70%: The Fixer can look at a broken mechanical device once per day and repair it. She doesn’t have to know what’s wrong, she just looks and fixes. It only works on one particular device, not a huge system of systems. She can zap the virus in Johnny’s PC with a withering glance; she cannot undo the New York City blackout by staring really hard at a light bulb.

71-90%: The Fixer seizes the moment. The Fixer can designate one dice roll per encounter as the climatic moment and roll as if it were that individual’s Noble Stimulus. This works regardless of why they are rolling and what is being checked. If it is an attack roll, and it succeeds, use OUWICA rules for damage. If it is a skill check, assume an extraordinary success. It only works once per encounter. Choose wisely.

91-100%: The Fixer never chokes. The Fixer can designate 1 situation per month and make every dice check in that situation as if it were the simplest check in the world. If Repair Man Jack, The Fixer is driving his Ferrari at 205 mph through a frozen rain storm, he rolls as if he’s driving his Chevy Suburban to the Grocery Store on a sunny day. Make opponents rolling against him only ½ as likely to succeed in their checks. They are in terror or awe of the Fixer at this point.

…nice core idea, but where’s the taboo?

Good Point! I’d have to make it taboo for a fixer to enjoy the fruits of victory or to ever really settle down and be comfortable.

    Sounds about right.

…wait, that’s more of a Masterless Man thing. Oh well.

I’m not sure the wording for the last channel is completely clear. Is it:

    a) the fixer can designate one type of situation he’s completely cool in at the beginning of the month, which he can then use at any time during the month as many times as he likes

    OR

    b) at any point in the month, can the fixer can designate one particular scenario as being completely cool in, ie, one particular gun battle, one particular gambling contest etc which then wears off and then he can’t use that channel for another 30 days?

Probably answer b. Thanks for pointing that out.
