“The Sun will never set on The British Empire.”
The imperialist could jump to life straight out of a Rudyard Kipling poem. He’s the man who will plant the Union jack on any square patch of soil that it doesn’t currently fly on. By the 19th Century, there weren’t all that many disputed patches left to plant it on, but the British Empire tried to expand, nonetheless.
Attributes: The Imperialist combines a quasi-religious faith in Queen and Country with an unstoppable drive and the upper-class version of 19th Century coolness; the stiff upper lip. The Imperialist has been around the world and back again. His whole life revolves around seeing to it that Britannia rules the waves.
The Imperialist has a glaring defect. The Imperialist does not quite acknowledge that non-British people are really full-fledged humans. Hence, the Imperialist will treat them with disdain and expend them when necessary to meet his ends.
Taboo: The Imperialist always must keep up the British End. This involves two character traits. She must always serve her country and she must never let the heavens see her sweat. If an imperialist betrays Mother England or panics in the face of the “fuzzy-wuzzies” or “the bloody wogs”, there is a disturbance in the force and the connection with The Ascended One weakens.
Symbols: Kipling’s Poetry, John Bull, The Union Jack
Suspected Avatars: Disraeli, Nelson, Wellington, Captain Cook, Maybe Winston Churchill
Masks: John Bull, Adam Quartermayne, William Bly
Channels: 1-50% The Stiff Upper Lip – A successful check against Avatar skill with this Channel will allow The Imperialist to ignore the negative effects of fear and to invoke his noble stimulus instead until the situation causing the fear to occur subsides.
51 – 70%: For Queen and Country – A successful avatar check allows the Imperialist to undertake any action that can be construed as patriotic duty under the noble stimulus. It will also allow him to compete against an enemy of the realm under his rage stimulus.
71 – 90%: The Iron Duke – The Imperialist will inspire all Britishers around him to unite against a common enemy. If this check is successful, they will do everything short of personally risking life and limb to help him defeat an adversary that he convinces them is an enemy of the empire. Give each member of the group a roll against their soul at -25%. If they fail, they join in. If they succeed, they find the Imperialist mildly disgusting.
91-99%: “We will Never surrender” – The Imperialist can make his countrymen riot against a perceived enemy. Roll the riot IAW the rules in “Hush-Hush.” Give them a level five self-check. If they make this, they stay out of the riot, and they will not be effected by or respect The Imperialist ever again. All those who fail will gladly burn anyone the Imperialist calls a witch.
Hrm…I realize this is supposed to be a setting-specific avatar, but with a little modification (pretty much the channel names and masks) this could be a general Avatar as well. Perhaps called the Patriot.
Sure, he’s the Imperialist for now because of where and when he’s suppossed to be an NPC.
Just a little nitpick — Rudyard Kipling never saw non-British people as ‘”not quite human.” He believed in the Empire, and he probably believed in racial differences, but he never believed in different rights. His poem “The White Man’s Burden,” for instance, was a rather bitter commentary on American policies in the Phillipines. The Imperialist as described was common, but with that taboo, Kipling himself could never have channeled the archetype.
