A monacle with effects similar to Cliomancy’s Past Sight
The monacle is currently in the hands of a clionmancer called Chantelle Depuis, who is a history lecturer at California University. It’s origins are unknown but it was likely created by a cliomancer.
The monacle is simply a brass ring with a lens in the centre and a small loop though which is threaded one of those thin chains that attached it to your pocket.
Along the rim of the brass, the inscription reads in latin “Ask me what happened.”
The user holds it against his eye and asks (it hads to be a question like in the cliomancy spell ‘past sight’, such as “What happened on this spot in 1753” or “Show me this building being erected”.)
The world goes a sepia colour and the user can only move like a person underwater. (a bit like the max payne dream sequences!) And he sees whatever he asks for… an event from the past is actually occuring in front of his eyes.
In a few seconds, there is a white flash and a figure is lying on the floor, crawling towards the user (or on the ceiling, etc). The figure is wearing a robe, is painfully thin, and has no features on his head or face- no eyes, mouth or nasal openings (like a man with stockings over his head).
Shortly after, another flash, and now there are two. this keeps happening (but the number sometimes goes up by more) and each watcher crawls painfully towards the user. If he tries to remove the monacle, is becomes very hard- the first time he uses it, it may take one or two pulls, but this number gets higher (so on the third use he may have to take several struggle rolls to wrench it from his face, all the time the watchers are getting closer to his feet)
When they touch him, it burns like a hot iron, resulting in finger shaped burns all over if he is slow in removing the monacle. If he kicks at them, they just flow like ink in water and re-form wihout letting go.
If the user tries to influence the historical event he sees, his fingers go through with the same effect.
If you watch someone use it, they dissapear when the ask the question, and re appear when they remove the monacle. They will retain any burns they got, and no matter how long they used it, they will have a bloodshot eye and there will be a small amount of blood on the inside of the lens, which then gets soaked in.
No-one knows where the blood goes, or who the watchers are. However since it gets increasingly harderto pull off, it is feasable that if you keep using the monacle, you will eventually not be able to remove it, and will be smothered by the watchers. A witness will see you dissapear, then a bit later, the monacle remanifest in mid air and drop harmlessly to the ground, with the tiny speck of blood.
