Litigomancy

Law is your will – law without love.

Nickname: ambulance chasers

No lawsuit is frivolous. The gears of society are kept slick by the oily lubricant of the U.S. Legal system. The law is the final authority in all disputes, and the last refuge of conflict.

But that same law is full of gaps and contradictions. It’s a weak and fallible system where assumptions and money carry tremendous power.

And you love it that way.

Through the courts flow a million fears and conflicts. The poor and the desperate, the wealthy and the corrupt, the sharks and the victims all come and bow before the court, hoping for its mercy and justice.

You are the secret high priest of this new grand temple, but you swear no fealty to it. You tap into its power and wrap that power around you. You shape the law to your own beautiful design. You dig your fingers into the cracks and loopholes, and pull out forbidden treasure.

You are more than a parasite of the law. You are the secret withering heart of the law.

Generate a minor charge: Spend six hours in a courtroom. You can be a participant or an observer.
Generate a significant charge: Win a court case wrongly. The court’s ruling must be objectively incorrect, whether due to misinterpretation or tampering. If the decision is a matter of interpretation, it’s not worth a charge. You must win based on prejudice, clear misinterpretation, tampering or deception.
Generate a major charge: Win wrongly in a major public case in the highest court in the land.

Taboo: You can never work as a courtroom or legal professional of any kind, and you can never hire the services of a lawyer or attorney. Doing so causes you to lose all charges. If you obtain any formal legal training, you lose all charges and cannot gain more. To join rhe court system is to become its slave, not its master.

Blast: Litigomancy has no blast.

Symbolic Tension: The legal system is the final arbitrator of justice and fairness, but the Litigomancer pursues injustice within that system.

Random Magic: Peaceful conflict. Litigomancy is always used to hurt and deceive in a civilized manner.

Charging Tips: It’s easy to gain a minor charge every spare day you have, as long as you work in a job where you can take weekdays off. Significant charges involve risk and preparation, and you will have trouble earning more than one or two a year. Remember you can’t use magic to gather charges, so you risk just as much as anyone else who attempts a fraudulent lawsuit – more, in fact, since you can’t hire a lawyer.

Starting charges: 3 minor

Minor formulas

My Interpretation
1 minor charge
Use your Litigomancy skill in place of a Charm or Lie skill, but only when dealing with someone you dislike or oppose.

Anarchist’s Blessing
2 minor charges
For the next hour, you’re invisible to cops. This formula is like the dipsomancy formula Just a Harmless Drunk, but it only affects government-paid law enforcement and military personnel.

Tabled Motion
3 minor charges
Usable in the middle of a conflict, whether it’s a fistfight or an argument. The conflict ends suddenly and can’t continue for ten minutes. Nobody, friend or foe, may press the dispute during that time. If an outside force starts the conflict anew, the effect ends early.

Under Oath
2 minor charges
Touch a single subject. For the next hour, the subject will feel a dread of deception. If the subject lies, or omits relevent truth, the subject must make a Rank 5 Isolation Stress check.

Writ
1 minor charge
Get any documentation you need! This formula turns an appropriately-sized piece of paper (or a stack) into any generic legal document. You could produce a new driver’s license, a building permit, or a search warrant.

Significant Formulas

Search and Seizure
1 significant charges
Touch a victim and choose something that they own (or at least possess) but aren’t carrying. The object is transported to your possession. You could steal their car, television or jacket, but not something intangible like reputation or bank account. The object will appear someplace under your control (like, say, your apartment) but not into your immediate possession.

Where Prohibited
2 significant charge
Touch a written contract (or a monitor displaying an electronic contract). The contract becomes void. Anyone who looks at the contract will immediately know that it is not a valid contract, and will treat it as meaningless.. Other copies of the contract are also affected.

Habeas Corpus
1 significant charge
A victim within your line of sight disappears to the nearest jail. No one’s memory will be changed, but paperwork will appear describing a valid arrest, and a decent reason to keep the victim in jail for 24 hours. The victim’s possessions will go into appropriate storage in the jail, and a new outfit will be worn, as if the victim had been processed normally. No further evidence is created, and in most free countries, the victim will go free once the time expires.

Deal with the Devil
3 significant charges
Write out a contract and sign it before you use this formula. You’ll summon a demon and attempt to control. If you succeed at controlling the demon, the demon has two choices: sign the contract or return back home. If it signs, the demon is bound by the letter, but not the spirit, of the contract.

Intellectual Property Violation
2 significant charges
This formula’s pretty new, and arises from the many intellectual property disputes sparked by the rise of the internet. Touch a victim and choose something you believe they know. If they do know it, the information will become available to everyone on multiple public web sites and search engines. If they don’t, you’ve wasted your charges.

Major Effects
Bankrupt a corporation. Retroactively change a law. Steal an intangible property.

Nice one. I thought that the sig formulas were too powerful, but getting sig charges is rather difficult.

Intellectual property violation is probably a bit to expemsive (compare it with cliomancys collective unconsiousness). The spell-costs are reasonable for a country with a decent legal system, but in a corrupt country with bribeably courts it’s way (WAY) to cheap.

    Interesting take on the issue!

On the other hand the more easily corrupt a justice system in a country is the less there is a chance for the symbolic tension to work. So the public perception of the courts would affect how the school fits. What is needed is a highly corrupt legal system which everyone believes is the paragon of justice and fariness.

I have to admit, this school was desined to work in the legal environment of the United States – notably flawed but not thoroughly broken. Totally USA-centric of me, and my apologies. In most stable governments, it’ll probably work about as well.

Anyway, pedant is totally on the money. In a more corrupt legal system, everything would cost more charges, or possibly become impossible, as the symbolic tension breaks down.

As always, I like the school but have a complaint. The taboo may be a bit harsh depending on the interpretation of the words “formal legal training”. Does the guy who studies law at home in some of his spare time break taboo? I’d change it so that the Litigomancer cannot become a certified professional — in the United States, he can’t pass the Bar Exam unless he wants to lose his power.
