The mystical divinity of unashamed felinity.
(The second in the seiries of Animal Archetypes)
Cats are haughty, lazy, entirely self-absorbed things, and we love them for it. If the dog is man’s best friend, the cat is man’s slimy, mooching brother-in-law – you know they bring nothing to the table, but it just isn’t done to kick them out.
Symbols: Bowls of milk, catnip, luxuries for pets.
Masks: The sacred cats of Egypt, the goddess Bast.
Suspected avatars: All eight-thousand of your local Old Cat Lady’s pets, every cat that’s ever been left an inheritance…
Taboo: The Sacred Cat simply does not care for the fragile mores of others. Whemever you neglect short-term base desires, your connection weakens.
Note: A Sacred Cat cannot take a Paradigm Skill without snapping her connection to the Avatar. The Cat is about aloof detachment, and simply will not stand for such meaningless restraints.
Channels:
1-50 Fickle Feline’s Felicitous
“Whatever I was going to do anyway” is the guiding principle of the Sacred Cat. Should you fail a Self check as a direct result of your own actions, and the result is still under your Avatar: The Sacred Cat skill, the check is negated with no notches gained.
51-70: Wide-Eyed Stray
The Sacred Cat is the master of needless obligations and unrequited offerings. With a moment of eye contact and an Avatar roll that exceeds the target’s Mind, The Sacred Cat can cajole food, drink, shelter and similarly small favors from all but the most hard-hearted. True sociopaths and the Sacred Cat’s bitter enemies are immune to this Channel.
71-90: Cat’s Eye
From old wives’ tales to ancient egyptian divination, those glowing eyes have long been said to see more tham they ought.
The Sacred Cat can read auras. see demons and otherwise percieve the spiritual. This is a permanent Channel, although many wish it weren’t. It gives no special insight into the meanings behind the sights, although some of them are rather straightforward – a hulking beast made out of squirming, writhing teeth is alnost universally a Bad Thing.
91%+: Nine Lives
With its nose haughtily upturned. The Sacred Cat approaches certain death with arrogant surety.
The Sacred Cat may flip-flop all damage, including falling and sar wrecks, in her favor. The effect persists so long as the Avatar does not directly act on the danger surrounding her. Marching through suppressive fire is fine, but turning to attack the shooters will instantly end the protection.
One thing I always wondered, actually: The sacred cats were sacred because they fought and killed the mice and rats that would otherwise ravage crops and foodstores. Were the SACRED Sacred Cats the same animals as those in the field, or were they separate exemplars? I was always curious about that.
I don’t think the Egyptians saw a division. They turned away from Persian lines because they hid behind a herd of cats, and the Egyptians retreated rather than risk harming them.
This shows that ALL cats were equally sacred – so yes, the grain guardians were probably regarded wiith the same esteem as the temple cats used in divination, even if the latter wasn’t as practical.
How about the higher the cat’s avatar rating, the more effective their entrails are as divining tools?
