If Julia Scheff were the youngest of five children, or the only daughter, then maybe her parents would have paid more attention to her when she was growing up. But she was second-youngest, and had an older sister, so she had to work that much harder to be noticed. She knew from an early age that she wanted to be a performer, and drawn to stage magic when she saw Penn and Teller perform on television. There didn’t seem to be a lot of women in the field, anyway, unless they were wearing skimpy leotards and being cut in half. Once she’d learned a few card tricks, she knew she’d found a discipline where she could stand out.

After working her way through college, she moved to L.A. and adopted the stage name Juliet Borgia. Within seven years, her dry, sardonic wit, physical prowess, and audacious illusions had gained her a solid fan base, a show in Las Vegas, three HBO specials, and an ongoing series on the Learning Channel, explaining the basics of social engineering and cold reading. That she was able to achieve all of this without having to exploit her sexuality is a particular point of pride. She’s rich, famous, and doesn’t have any worries, except…

…except about a month ago, she took a tumble down the stairs of her Vegas home. Nothing serious; it’s not like she she should have died, but she definitely should have hit her head on something. Instead, she never even hit the floor; she found herself levitating a foot off the ground.

By virtue of being a self-made woman who’s refused to resort to the usual cliches of being a woman in the world of stage magic, Juliet Borgia has been channeling the Flying Woman for years. Not that she knows this, of course; she only knows that, for some reason, she can float now.

She’d like to know why, and has started making some general inquiries in that direction.
