The Deja View
This work, when taken, causes the user to vividly experience a single memory in crystal clarity. It feels to them as though they are living it all over again. This can be used to help remember specific details from the past, but it also has a more potent use. It is possible for the user to act differently in the memory than they did in real life, and the memory will react realistically. While this doesn’t affect the real world physically. it cannot change the past, it can change the memories of those affected by the changes. These new memories are usually short-lived, as they conflict with other memories from around that time, and are forgotten. However, if the user tries to jog thier memory, and if they are consistent with other memories, they will be accepted as truth, and remembered forever. The nostalgic Narqui (or whoever he gives the drug to) can spend days or even years trying to go back and relive an event perfectly, and in such a way that everyone remembers it differently, all the while wasting away the here and now.
In game terms, the user gets to have perfect recall of details from the memory they relive. They can also do more investigating beyond what they remember, so they could thoroughly search a room for something they suspected might be there, but that they never looked for in real life. When dealing with the conflicting memories of an event, the Narqui can hold both (or all three, or four, and so on) memories in thier mind at the same time. Any normal user of the work will usually be able to handle remembering the events in two different ways, but beyond that they must take a rank-2 self check for the third memory, which increases by 1 level of difficulty in each additional iteration (they can choose to forget one of the iterations the next time they take Deja-View, reducing the difficulty by 1). Those affected by altered memories must make a self check if the user tries to jog thier memory of the event, if they fail they will remember the altered version of events, but they will not gain a hardened notch if they succeed.
The Shit Sifter
This work lets the user cut through doublespeak and small talk, and get to the real meaning of language. It allows the user to intuitively understand what the person speaking really means, even if they aren’t saying it. This is obviously useful during an interrogation, but it can also be of great use in social situations.
It is so good at filtering the truth from the lies and half-truths, that a lot of language is ignored. So unlike those who have learned to read body language the legitimate way, the user is blind to the real words used. This means they can seem as though they are not entirely concentrating on any conversations they are involved in. So they get some bonus to understanding meaning, but a minus to manipulating the person in question.
While this is a truth detector, it is not foolproof. If someone believes something, that is what will come across to the user, not whether it is objectively true.
Examples of use would be; If the user is talking to a member of the opposite sex, they would immediately know if they were interested in them or not. If the user is watching an interview with a politician, the would immediately know if they intended to keep thier policies when in office, or maybe even some information about what thier real intentions are, even if not enunciated. If interrogating a suspect, they would be able to know if they had the information they needed, and maybe even get that information by simply talking around it.
Interesting. Speculation on ingredients might be nice. 🙂
Hmmm..
The Deja-View would be made up of acid or LSD or some other psychadelic drug. I though about requiring a keepsake from the time of the memory to allow the user to relive it, but part of the idea behind it was the (near) pointless attempt to change the past, so it should be easy to try, difficult to succeed at. When one is using this work, one looks as though they are just tripping out on the floor, mumbling about the things they see.
The Shit Sifter is something like prozac or xanex, maybe ritalin, maybe valium. It would make you seem like you were daydreaming to those around you.
Maybe the shit-sifter is based on Scopalmine, the so-called “truth serum”.
